Study the Classic Chess archive with your AI assistant

What you can ask

Find

Players & games

Search the study archive and master database by player, event, opening, result or theme.

Read

PGNs, biographies & annotations

Open any game's moves, a player's biography, and published annotations with their sources.

Plan

Study plans

Save an ordered plan of up to 100 games with your notes. It appears in your library on the website.

Progress

What to study next

Mark games studied and ask what to work on next. Your assistant and the website share the same progress.

Your account

Public searches need no account. To save plans or read your progress, sign in with your own Classic Chess account and approve library read and write access. Don't have one yet? Create it through Sign in. You can revoke a connection at any time in Settings.

Connect your assistant

Both setups below ask for the Classic Chess server URL: https://classicchess.com/mcp/

Claude

Custom connectors are available on Claude Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise; Free allows one.

  1. In Claude, open Customize → Connectors → + Add → Add custom connector.
  2. Name it Classic Chess, paste the server URL above, and continue.
  3. Choose Sign in now and Register automatically. Continue, add the connector, then connect.
  4. Sign in to Classic Chess and approve library access.
  5. In a chat, use + → Connectors to turn on Classic Chess.

On Team and Enterprise, an organization owner adds the connector first under Organization settings → Connectors → Add → Custom → Web, and members then connect individually. Menus can change; see Claude's current instructions.

ChatGPT

Custom connections depend on your ChatGPT plan and workspace permissions. Pro currently supports reading only; saving and changing plans needs full access on Business, Enterprise or Edu. If your workspace already offers Classic Chess, select it in Apps and connect your account.

To add it yourself on Pro, or as a workspace administrator:

  1. Turn on Developer mode under Settings → Apps → Advanced settings. Your workspace administrator may need to allow it first.
  2. Open Apps → Create. Administrators can use Workspace settings → Apps → Create.
  3. Name the app Classic Chess, paste the server URL above and choose OAuth.
  4. Choose Scan Tools, sign in to Classic Chess, approve library access, then finish creating the app.
  5. In a new chat, select Classic Chess from the tools menu or mention it by name. Approve saves when ChatGPT asks.

Administrators can publish the app to workspace members. Menus and availability can change; see OpenAI's current instructions.

Try your first study plan

Ask: “Use Classic Chess to build a five-game rook-endgame study plan for a 1500-rated player. Explain each selection and save it to my account.” On a read-only connection, ask for the selections and game links instead. Later, ask “What have I studied, and what should I work on next?”
