Annotations

Game V. Fifth game between Messrs. Wyvill and Williams (Third Series), won by Wyvill with the Black pieces. Irregular Opening. Staunton lays Black's advantage to White's mistaken advance of the K. B. P. at the twenty-second move.

1. 9…Ba6 This move of B. to Q. R's 3rd, looks very frequently of more service than it proves. In the present game, the Bishop remains inactive and comparatively useless for nearly twenty moves.
2. 21.Na4 Intending, probably, to play Q. to her B's 3rd.
3. 22.f5 Had White been able to look a move or two deeper than he did, the error of this step must have been manifest to him in a moment.
4. 23…Bd8 A good retort.
5. 24.exf5 This was certainly a strange oversight for so careful a player. Do what he could, however, the game was much in Black's favour, which was mainly owing to the mistaken advance of the K. B. P. at move 22.
6. 30.Nf7 White plays this disheartening termination with unusual courage and ability.
7. 36…Qf8 This was the winning move apparently, although Mr. Wyvill failed to follow up the advantage so well as he might have done.
8. 43.Kd3 A position truly remarkable, and well deserving examination, for which purpose I give a diagram of it after Black's 42nd move.
