Another Evans's Gambit at Knight odds. Black's 8. ... P. to K. R's 3rd allows a sacrifice on the K. B's file, and Morphy's attack is quickly decisive.
- 2…Nc6 The second player's best move, when receiving the odds of the Q's Kt., is to play now P. to Q's 4th, as is correctly observed in the “Popular Introduction to Chess,” p. 58.
- 8…h6 This move does not effect the object for which it is made, as the reader will see, for instead of retreating the Kt., White can take the K. B's P., winning the exchange. P. to Q's 3rd or 4th would have been much better.
- 13…Ng6 This loses the game. He should have played 13. K. to Kt's sq., and upon Q. taking Kt., 14. P. to Q's 3rd, remaining with two pieces for the Rook, and a very good position.
