Incomplete record·games missing

Informal games between Adolf Anderssen and Fritz Riemann; the number played is unknown.

Incomplete record. This archive holds 12 games of this event; the others are missing, and the number played is not established. Riemann published additional games from 1878; their scores are unavailable from the approved sources, and the total number played is unknown.

These twelve recorded games were played by Adolf Anderssen and his pupil Fritz Riemann in Breslau during 1878. They form a surviving collection of informal games, without a documented formal match score.

Practice and shared analysis

Riemann recalls regular games at Dittmann’s and the analysis they undertook together afterwards. His memoir describes their teacher–pupil relationship and explains that many games were never retained.

The published chronological list includes twenty-four games from 1878. The approved archives supply twelve scores here; the whole number actually played during the year remains unknown. Earlier annual collections are separate.

The surviving record

The available scores retain their original moves and dates, including two dates known only to the month. A recovered score dated 23 April records an Anderssen win in the Evans Gambit. Its date, opening and result agree with the memoir’s entry for game 95; the full printed game lies outside the publisher preview and has not been collated move by move.

Source round numbers are preserved as archive metadata. They do not turn these practice games into a two-round match, and no aggregate of the surviving scores is presented as a formal result.
