Incomplete record. This archive holds 43 games of this event; the others are missing, and the number played is not established. The archive preserves 43 scores. Garbett–Lambert, round three, is known from a contemporary printed score but absent from both approved archives. The whole-event played total is unestablished.
Max Fuller won the Australian Open with seven wins and four draws from eleven rounds. John Grefe, Douglas Hamilton, Srbo Zaric and Eugenio Torre shared second place on eight points.
An unbeaten winner
Fuller finished one point clear of the four players tied on eight. Glenn Bordonada, Paul Dozsa and Arthur Pope followed on 7½; Paul Garbett, Michael Ginat, David Parr and the player named Suljk in the contemporary report shared the next group on seven. These placings come from Garbett’s participant report, rather than totals computed from the surviving scores.
Garbett describes extreme heat during the tournament and praises the standard of play among the leading players. The source game headers give only 1975; their partial dates are preserved alongside the report’s 4–16 February dates.
A partial surviving record
The archive preserves 43 scores. Garbett’s third-round win over G. Lambert is known from his contemporary printed score but is absent from both approved score archives. The total number of games actually played, and a complete default or bye ledger, have not been established; no numerical missing total is asserted.
The short native records are retained unchanged. No longer approved version was found, and the archive does not invent continuations. Grefe’s seventh-round win over Torre matches the mainline reproduced with his notes from the tournament book.
The Adelaide event
The February tournament was distinct from the New Year event in Brisbane and the Asian-Pacific zonal in Melbourne. A later account by Grefe’s tour organizer explains how those competitions fitted into his Australian visit. The Adelaide lightning tournament was a separate competition, won by Arthur Pope. No qualifying stage or title playoff is established for Fuller’s Open victory.
The later tour account describes Grefe as finishing third. The contemporary report lists Grefe, Hamilton, Zaric and Torre together on eight points; that reported tie is preserved here.
Result
Contemporary published leaders are described in the biography; the partial score record is not used to compute final standings.
