Božidar Ivanović won the fourteen-player international tournament in Bar with 9½ points from thirteen rounds. Jan Smejkal and Michael Stean shared second on 8½, followed by Krunoslav Hulak on 8.
A milestone for Ivanović
In his first-person account published in 2024, Ivanović recalled the autumn tournament in Bar and said that it brought him his second grandmaster norm. His recollections include Georgi Tringov, Dragoljub Minić and tournament director Rašo Marojević, who also arranged simultaneous exhibitions.
The original final table places Victor Ciocaltea, Vladimir Raičević and Ljubomir Živković together on 7. Győző Forintos, Rudolf Marić, Georgi Tringov and Miguel Quinteros scored 6; Dragoljub Minić finished on 5½, Dragoljub Zečević on 3½ and Maksim Lutovac on 2½.
The result record
The original full grid in Batsford’s FIDE Chess Yearbook 1977/78, credited to AIPE Chess News, agrees with all 91 archived pairing results and all fourteen totals. A separate modern round ledger also agrees with every native result, round and date. Contemporary Sportul reports corroborate four results from round four, three from round five, and Ivanović’s, Smejkal’s and Ciocaltea’s totals before the last round.
The 91-game census follows from the original complete ordinary-result grid and 91 legal positive scores, with each pair represented once. No concrete default, withdrawal, annulment or extra playoff is identified. This is a full ordinary-grid and positive-score inference; the yearbook page does not supply a prose census of played and defaulted games.
Source limits
The October 28 wire report explicitly gives standings before the final round. It names Adorján as Ciocaltea’s preceding opponent, whereas the complete native field and result ledger identify Forintos. The archive retains the native pairing and score and records that conflict without changing a player’s identity.
The original yearbook heading explicitly gives 12–27 October 1977, matching the native game dates. Only the original page image was acquired, not the entire book PDF or complete historical movetext. Its printed order is retained within equal-point groups without inventing a tiebreak. Original dates, rounds, names, results and moves are preserved, including short legal scores whose endpoints are not independently proved to be the final historical moves.
