Bariloche International Tournament 1953
Contemporary Chess Review reports Erich Eliskases as the Bariloche winner with 6½/9, ahead of Pedro Martín, Héctor Rossetto and José Steinberg on 6. All 45 pairings survive as played scores, but their results do not reproduce those reported standings.
The first Bariloche international
The ARA historical compilation identifies this as Bariloche’s first international tournament. It gives 6–22 December 1953 and reports that Sonneborn–Berger placed Steinberg second, Martín third and Rossetto fourth among the players on 6 points. Those dates and prize details have not been checked against the original Argentine reports.
Its reported final totals are Eliskases 6½; Steinberg, Martín and Rossetto 6; Shocron 5½; Jáuregui 3½; Wexler, Ader Hausman and Gonzalez 3; Reinhardt 2½. The full lower standings come from this later compilation, whose matrix has the inconsistencies described below.
Two conflicting records
The original June 1954 Chess Review report independently names Eliskases as winner and gives the same top four totals. It does not identify the year or individual game results. The archived 1953 scores instead add up to Rossetto 7, Eliskases 6½, Martín 6 and Steinberg 5. Their results and moves are preserved.
The later compilation is internally inconsistent too. Its Wexler–Gonzalez cell conflicts with its printed totals, and its Steinberg–Rossetto caption agrees with the archived Rossetto win while its grid credits Steinberg. These discrepancies do not establish which particular score or result should be changed. The archive therefore shows the reported outcome with this qualification and suppresses the computed cross-table.
Complete pair coverage
Every unordered pair of the ten-player field has one positive legal score: five games in each of nine rounds. This establishes 45 played games from the scores themselves, rather than from the nominal schedule. No missing pairing or fragment is asserted.
All game dates remain the source’s unknown 1953 dates. The source’s rounds, results, names, starting positions and moves are unchanged. Expanded searches found no necessary companion stage, additional target score or longer version.
Result
All 45 pairings have positive legal archived scores. The original June 1954 report names Eliskases as winner, while the preserved results give Rossetto the highest total. The later complete standings also contain internal matrix errors. The computed cross-table is suppressed and every native result and move is retained; no games are labelled missing.
