A champion on home ground

Victor Ciocâltea was one of Romania's leading players for three decades — a multiple national champion, and internationally best remembered for defeating Bobby Fischer at the 1962 Varna Olympiad. In 1975, at the peak of a career that would bring him the grandmaster title in 1978, he took first place in his home city with 10 points from 14 games.

Knaak the clear runner-up

East Germany's Rainer Knaak was the closest pursuer, finishing alone in second on 9. Behind him a three-way tie for third on 8 brought together Charles Partos, Volf Vaisman and the Soviet grandmaster Anatoly Lutikov.

The rest was a broad international field — Czechoslovak, Bulgarian, Polish, Argentine and Cuban players among the Romanians — but Ciocâltea's steadiness gave the host nation a rare home win in the series.
