Vassily Ivanchuk won the knockout finals of the seventeenth Carlos Torre Memorial in Mérida. He defeated Jesús Nogueiras, Sergei Tiviakov, Yuniesky Quesada and Alexander Graf, finishing with eight wins and two draws. All 38 knockout games survive in the archive.
A decisive finish
Ivanchuk beat Nogueiras 2–0 in the first round. Tiviakov held both scheduled quarterfinal games to draws, before Ivanchuk won the two rapid tiebreaks. Ivanchuk then defeated Quesada and Graf by the same 2–0 score. Graf reached the final by overcoming Roberto Martín del Campo, Šarūnas Šulskis and Neuris Delgado.
From the open to the knockout
The wider memorial ran from 13 to 21 December. Twelve players qualified after six rounds of the open and joined four seeds: Ivanchuk, Vadim Milov, Graf and defending champion Quesada. The Swiss competition continued separately to nine rounds; its games are outside this collection.
Each knockout match began with two games at ninety minutes plus thirty seconds per move. Drawn matches continued with two rapid games at fifteen minutes per player. The four extended matches ended after that pair; no deciding fifth game was played.
A complete knockout collection
The fifteen matches produced 38 games across four knockout rounds: twenty in the first round, twelve in the quarterfinals, four in the semifinals and two in the final. Thirty were scheduled games and eight were rapid tiebreaks. Every played slot in both published brackets is represented.
The second first-round game between Walter Arencibia and Holden Hernández is recorded as a Black win in the native database. Both contemporary brackets give a draw and a 1½–½ match win for Hernández. The archive corrects only that result, preserving all 101 plies, the date, players and round.
The brackets establish the match results and completeness of this collection. A separate movetext witness was not recovered for the 38 scores; their legal native moves are preserved throughout. A different Arencibia–Hernández draw from the qualifying open on 16 December remains outside the knockout.
Result
This complete collection is a knockout with tiebreak games; aggregate game points do not form an all-player cross table. The separate nine-round Swiss tournament is a different collection.
