Dortmund 1976
The fourth Dortmunder Schachtage saw a young Soviet talent announce himself to Western Europe: Oleg Romanishin, who had trained alongside Mikhail Tal, cruised to 9½ from 11 in a twelve-player field that also included England's brand-new grandmaster Anthony Miles and Hungary's veteran blindfold-simul specialist János Flesch.
◈A new grandmaster among old hands
Twelve players met for a single round-robin of 66 games in the fourth Dortmunder Schachtage. England's Anthony Miles arrived having completed his final grandmaster norm at Dubna only months earlier, making him the first English-born player to hold the title; Hungary's János Flesch, a veteran grandmaster better known worldwide for his blindfold simultaneous exhibitions, brought decades of experience to the field.
◈Romanishin's runaway
Oleg Romanishin, a rising Soviet grandmaster from Lviv who had trained alongside Mikhail Tal, was in irresistible form. He finished the eleven rounds on 9½ points, a full point clear of Flesch's 8½, with Miles taking third on 8. It was one of the more commanding performances of the tournament's first decade, and a marker of how quickly the young event was attracting genuine international strength.
