Dortmund 1980
Staged the same July fortnight that a seventeen-year-old Garry Kasparov was in town to win the World Junior Chess Championship, the eighth Dortmunder Schachtage crowned England's Raymond Keene, who finished half a point clear of his countryman Murray Chandler in a twelve-player field that also included Hungary's Ferenc Portisch and Romania's long-time champion Victor Ciocâltea.
◈A festival fortnight
The eighth Dortmunder Schachtage ran from 1 to 13 July 1980 in the exhibition hall of Dortmund's Westfalenpark, by then an established fixture on the international calendar. The same grounds hosted the World Junior Chess Championship that fortnight, which a seventeen-year-old Garry Kasparov won without playing in the grandmaster event itself.
Twelve players contested the round-robin of 66 games. Raymond Keene, only the second English player after Anthony Miles to hold the grandmaster title, led a field that included the rising New Zealand-born international master Murray Chandler, Hungary's Ferenc Portisch, and Romania's long-time champion Victor Ciocâltea.
◈Keene's title
Keene won with 7½ from 11, half a point ahead of Chandler on 7. Ciocâltea and Portisch shared third on 6½, with Eric Lobron and Werner Hug close behind on 6. It was a career highlight for Keene, who went on to become a leading chess author and organiser and, within a few years, one of Garry Kasparov's own seconds in his world championship matches.
