5th European Chess Club Cup Final — Moscow 1986
CSKA Moscow controlled both legs of the 5th European Chess Club Cup final, defeating Trud 4½-1½ and 4-2. The 8½-3½ aggregate completed five consecutive knockout wins for the new champion.
◈Two Soviet paths through Europe
Twenty-eight clubs from 25 countries entered the 1985–1986 edition. CSKA defeated Bayern Munich, Matinkylän SK, SV Eindhoven and Anderlecht Brussels on its way to the final. Trud eliminated Bosna Sarajevo, Clichy, Frederiksberg and Rockaden Stockholm.
As in the preceding editions, each tie was decided across two six-board legs by aggregate board count, with an elimination rule available after a tie. The Moscow championship match needed no secondary rule.
◈CSKA pulls away immediately
Anatoly Karpov beat Alexander Beliavsky, Artur Yusupov beat Mikhail Tal, and Yevgeniy Vladimirov beat Vitaly Tseshkovsky in the first leg. With three other draws, CSKA led 4½-1½.
The return leg ended 4-2. Vladimir Tukmakov beat Adrian Mikhalchishin and Smbat Lputian beat Josif Dorfman, while the other four boards were drawn. CSKA's six-player final roster also included Vladimir Malaniuk; Trud used seven players across the match.
