IBM Amsterdam 1961
The first IBM international tournament gathered a closed field of twelve in a company canteen in Amsterdam-West, with the pairings drawn by an IBM computer. The story was local: engineering student Christian "Kick" Langeweg, a member of the host club, opened with eight straight wins and finished on 9/11, a clear point ahead of grandmaster Jan Hein Donner.
A company, a computer, and a chess club
IBM Nederland put up the money — reportedly 5,000 guilders — for what would grow into one of Europe's strongest annual tournaments, running in Amsterdam from 1961 to 1981. This first edition was a closed twelve-player round-robin organised by the Amsterdam club VAS, played in IBM's office canteen on the Johan Huizingalaan, with adjourned games finished at the city's Schaakhuis.
In a nod to its sponsor's business, the pairing draw was made by an IBM computer — a genuine novelty in 1961. The modest field mixed two grandmasters, Jan Hein Donner and the veteran Ossip Bernstein, with international masters such as Jens Enevoldsen, Robert Wade and Hans Johner.
Langeweg's clean start
The result belonged to a young engineering student and VAS member, Christian "Kick" Langeweg, who reeled off eight consecutive wins before easing to 9/11 and first prize. He finished a full point clear of Donner, whose 8½ took second, with Enevoldsen third on 7.
The performance was a real breakthrough: Langeweg was awarded the International Master title the following year and remained a fixture of Dutch chess for the next two decades.
The last of a golden age
At the bottom of the table was one of the game's great veterans. Ossip Bernstein, born in 1882 and a leading master before 1914, was 78 when he played here and scored only a single point. He died the following year, so this was one of the last tournaments of a long career.
