IBM Amsterdam 1962
In its second year the IBM tournament had already grown into a festival of roughly a hundred players, amateurs contesting the evenings while the invited masters played by day. The twelve-player master group ended in a dead heat: Moshe Czerniak of Israel and Hiong Liong Tan of Indonesia shared first on 8/11, a point clear of the leading home player, Jan Hein Donner.
◈From closed event to festival
Buoyed by the success of the first edition, IBM Nederland expanded the 1962 tournament into a broad chess festival. Around a hundred players took part across several sections, with amateurs playing evening rounds and the invited masters competing during the day — the model that would define the event for years to come.
The headline section remained a twelve-player round-robin. Alongside the Dutch contingent led by Donner, the field drew masters from across Europe, including Georg Kieninger, Arthur Dunkelblum, Ludwig Rellstab and Wolfgang Heidenfeld.
◈A shared title
Two travellers set the pace. Moshe Czerniak, the Polish-born Israeli, and Hiong Liong Tan each scored 8/11 to tie for first, finishing a point ahead of Donner on 7. Kieninger took fourth on 6½.
Further down the table was a glimpse of the future: the teenage Amsterdammer Rob Hartoch, whose feel for position impressed onlookers even as his opening knowledge lagged behind the seasoned masters.
