The event and its record

Karel Opočenský won the international tournament held alongside the French chess congress in Nice from 2 to 10 September 1938. He scored 7½ points from nine games, ahead of Brian Reilly on seven and W. Koserak on 6½. The international tournament was separate from the French championship and the congress’s subsidiary sections.

Forty-four of the forty-five published games are available. The missing score is Schirrer–Fuchs in round four, recorded as a win for Black. The complete published table gives nine ordinary results per player, without default notation; the played total follows that record.

The preserved Griess–Sutherland game is a draw, agreeing with the full published matrix. Another historical summary gives those players different final totals. The available score is retained, and the published standings are supplied separately from the incomplete collection.
