Reggio Emilia 1958/59
On 27 December 1958, Enrico Paoli's idea for a New Year's tournament in his home city had its quietly historic first running: a ten-player round-robin that would grow, over more than five decades, into Italy's most storied chess event. Swiss master Otto Marthaler won it outright, scoring 8 from 9 to finish a point and a half clear of the field — with Paoli himself, the tournament's own founder, settling for fourth place in the event he had just created.
◈A New Year's idea takes shape
Enrico Paoli, the Italian grandmaster honoris causa, had been struck by a New Year's tournament he had seen in Lucerne and resolved to bring the idea home. With backing from Reggio Emilia's provincial tourism board, the plan became reality on 27 December 1958, when ten players sat down for the first Torneo di Capodanno — a modest gathering that nobody involved could have known would still be running, in far grander form, more than fifty New Years later.
The inaugural field was a regional European mix rather than a showcase of international stars: alongside Paoli were Switzerland's Otto Marthaler, Stupica, Winiwarter, and a supporting cast of Italian and French club and national players, including Primavera, Fricker, Seitz, Siveri, Piccinini, and Vittiglio.
◈Marthaler's clear win
Marthaler dominated the nine-round race, finishing on 8 points to win by a point and a half over Stupica's 7½. Winiwarter took third on 7, with Paoli fourth on 6 — a respectable finish, but not the outcome a founder might have hoped for in his own tournament.
It was a quiet start to what became Italy's oldest and most celebrated chess event, a series that would go on to host Kasparov, Karpov, and Anand before its final edition more than half a century later.
