Reggio Emilia 1959/60
A year after Otto Marthaler's runaway win in the first Torneo, Reggio Emilia's second New Year gathering went to Yugoslavia's Cveto Trampuz, who edged a tighter nine-player field with 6½ from 8 — while Marthaler came back to defend his title and found, this time, only a quiet, mid-table finish.
◈A tighter field, a different winner
The second Torneo di Capodanno drew nine players to Reggio Emilia for eight rounds of round-robin play beginning 27 December 1959. Among them was the outgoing champion Otto Marthaler, back to test the field he had dominated twelve months earlier, alongside Yugoslavia's Cveto Trampuz and a supporting cast that included Bély, Kinzel, Seitz, Romani, Lilloni, Fricker, and Siveri.
◈Trampuz's turn
Trampuz won the tournament with 6½ from 8, half a point ahead of Bély on 6. Kinzel and Marthaler shared third on 5½ apiece — a solid return for the reigning champion, but a clear step back from his runaway win the year before.
The result showed the young Torneo di Capodanno was an open contest rather than a showcase for any one player, a pattern that held as the event grew, over the following decades, into Italy's premier chess tournament.
