Reggio Emilia 1960/61
The third Torneo di Capodanno was the closest of its young history: Hungarian master Péter Dely won a ten-player round-robin with 6½ from 9, holding off Enrico Paoli and Ulvestad by just half a point in a field that finished tightly bunched behind him.
◈The founder's field returns
Ten players gathered in Reggio Emilia for the third Torneo di Capodanno, beginning play on 27 December 1960. Tournament founder Enrico Paoli took part again, joined by Hungary's Péter Dely alongside Ulvestad, Francisco José Pérez, Glass, and Cuderman among others.
◈Dely's narrow win
Dely finished on 6½ from 9 to take the title, with Paoli and Ulvestad tied for second on 6 apiece and Pérez close behind. It was the first of the series' early titles to go to a Hungarian player, a country that would go on to supply several more Torneo di Capodanno champions over the following decade, including Győző Forintos two editions later.
