A field chasing norms

Organized by tournament founder Enrico Paoli's Accademia Reggiana Scacchi and approved by FIDE as an International Master norm event, the fifth edition drew twelve players including two grandmasters, Mato Damjanović of Yugoslavia and Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia, alongside international masters Braslav Rabar, Stefano Tatai, Károly Honfi and Paoli himself, who competed in the event he had built.

Held from 27 December to 6 January in the E.P.T.'s hall, the tournament ran its usual eleven rounds of 66 games.

Forintos runs away with it

Győző Forintos, a young Hungarian master who would go on to earn the grandmaster title a decade later, was untouchable: nine wins and two draws for 10 points from 11 games, without a single loss. Honfi took a distant second on 8½, with Damjanović third on 7½ and Rabar and Tatai sharing fourth on 7.

At the other end of the table, Paoli's own tournament proved no easier for its founder than for anyone else — he finished ninth on 4, behind Christian Langeweg and Filip, who shared sixth on 6½.
