Reggio Emilia 1965/66
The eighth Torneo di Capodanno belonged to Yugoslavia's Bruno Parma, the only grandmaster in a twelve-player field, who came home a full point clear on 9 from 11 — while, further down the table, a veteran nearly two decades removed from his own Reggio Emilia triumph, Esteban Canal, took his place among the competitors once again.
◈Parma in command
Bruno Parma, the sole grandmaster among the twelve entrants, set the pace early and never relinquished it, needing only a draw with Braslav Rabar in round one before piling up wins through the middle rounds. He crossed the line on 9 points from 11 games, a full point ahead of Czechoslovak IM Maximilián Ujtelky, who had shadowed him for most of the second half of the tournament before falling away in the closing rounds.
Behind them, Hungarian IM György Szilágyi and Italian IM Stefano Tatai shared third on 7½, with Yugoslav IM Braslav Rabar fourth on 6½. The tournament, as always, ran the full length of the New Year holiday, opening the day after Christmas and closing on the eve of Epiphany.
◈Old faces at the New Year table
Two competitors gave this edition a particular sense of continuity with the tournament's own history. Esteban Canal — the veteran Peruvian-Italian master who had won Reggio Emilia's very first, unofficial 1947 edition — was back at the board nearly twenty years later, finishing eighth on 4½. And Enrico Paoli, the Italian IM who had founded the annual tournament in 1958, again took his own place in the field, finishing ninth on 4 — the founder, once more, playing alongside the masters he had brought together.
