Reggio Emilia 1966/67
Károly Honfi led the ninth Torneo di Capodanno into its last day, but a final-round double swing carried Romania's Victor Ciocâltea and Yugoslavia's Dragoljub Ćirić level past him to 8 from 11 apiece — the first of Ciocâltea's two Reggio Emilia titles, awarded to him on tiebreak.
◈A last-round swing at the top
The field for the ninth edition was heavy with grandmaster and international master strength: Bulgaria's Milko Bobotsov and Yugoslavia's Mato Damjanović and Dragoljub Ćirić held GM titles, alongside IMs Victor Ciocâltea of Romania, Július Kozma of Czechoslovakia and Károly Honfi of Hungary. Honfi took the outright lead after round ten with 7½, a half point clear of Ciocâltea, Ćirić and Damjanović.
The final round reshuffled the table. Ciocâltea and Ćirić both won to reach 8, while Honfi and Damjanović could not add to their scores and were overtaken. With Ciocâltea and Ćirić tied for first, the tournament's tiebreak method settled the title in Ciocâltea's favor. Honfi and Kozma, the latter having won his last game to climb from 6½ to 7½, shared third.
◈A first Reggio Emilia title for Ciocâltea
This was Victor Ciocâltea's first Reggio Emilia victory; he would tie for first again in 1968/69, one of the highlights of a career that also included a first-place finish at Sofia 1962 and a win over Bobby Fischer at Varna the same year. As in earlier editions, tournament founder Enrico Paoli again competed, finishing eighth on 5 points.
