The twentieth Rubinstein Memorial — the jubilee edition of the series founded in 1963 — ended with two names at the top. East Germany's Lothar Vogt and Yugoslavia's Petar Popović each won five games without a loss to share first on 9½ from 14, with Vogt taking the title on tiebreak. For the 23-year-old Popović, a grandmaster of barely a year, it announced a career on the rise; for Vogt it stood as one of the finest international results of his life.

◈Two unbeaten winners

Vogt, a grandmaster since 1976 and twice champion of East Germany, and Popović, born in 1959 and awarded the grandmaster title in 1981, finished with identical records: five wins, nine draws, no defeats. Wikipedia's account of Vogt's career singles out the shared first at Polanica-Zdrój 1982 as his most significant international success, while for Popović the result came early in a career that would carry him onto Yugoslav Olympiad teams later in the decade.

A full point back, Bulgaria's Ivan Radulov and Poland's Krzysztof Pytel shared third on 8½ — both also unbeaten, each with three wins and eleven draws. Pytel's result, three victories without defeat, made him the best-placed of the seven Polish players.

◈Twenty years of the memorial

The jubilee twentieth edition confirmed how international the memorial to Akiba Rubinstein had become: the fifteen-player field of 105 games drew entrants from East Germany, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Romania, Cuba, and Poland, including the Cuban master José Luis Vilela and Romania's Ovidiu-Doru Foișor. Włodzimierz Schmidt, the defending champion and winner of the 1981 edition, finished on 7 this time.

Founded in 1963, two years after Rubinstein's death, the Polanica-Zdrój memorial had by 1982 established the reputation it would hold through the 1990s as a fixture of the Eastern European tournament calendar.
