Rubinstein Memorial 1983
The 21st Akiba Rubinstein Memorial in the Lower Silesian spa town of Polanica-Zdrój went to Viacheslav Dydyshko of the Soviet Union, who finished undefeated on 10/14 — half a point clear of grandmasters Jiří Lechtynský and Iván Faragó — in one of the finest international results of the Belarusian master's long career.
◈Rubinstein's memorial
The Rubinstein Memorial has been held in the spa town of Polanica-Zdrój since 1963, honoring Akiba Rubinstein, the great Polish master who died in 1961. By 1983 the annual event was a fixture of the Polish chess calendar, and its 21st edition drew a broad international field: grandmasters Iván Faragó of Hungary, Jiří Lechtynský of Czechoslovakia, Román Hernández of Cuba, Boško Abramović of Yugoslavia and Ardiansyah of Indonesia, alongside Bulgaria's Valentin Lukov, Romania's Valentin Stoica, and a strong home contingent of Polish masters.
◈Six wins, no defeats
Dydyshko took the title with six wins and eight draws, conceding no losses across the fourteen rounds. Lechtynský and Faragó shared second on 9½, Hernández was fourth on 8, and Abramović fifth on 7½. Among the Polish players, international masters Zbigniew Szymczak and Zbigniew Księski scored best with 6½ apiece — Szymczak remarkably losing only once while drawing thirteen games.
◈Belarus's quiet champion
Viacheslav Dydyshko, born in 1949, was the dominant figure of Belarusian chess for four decades: he won the Belarusian Championship eleven times between 1965 and 2006 and took the Baltic Championship in 1973 and 1974. International opportunities came more rarely, which makes his undefeated victory at Polanica-Zdrój 1983 — ahead of a rank of titled foreign grandmasters — stand out. The grandmaster title itself came late: FIDE awarded it to him only in 1995, and he went on to represent independent Belarus at seven Chess Olympiads.
