Netherlands vs Foreign Masters — Scheveningen 1923
Ten Dutch players met ten visiting masters in a 100-game team tournament staged for the fiftieth anniversary of the Dutch Chess Federation. The visitors won 69½–30½, while the event's all-against-all team format became known worldwide as the Scheveningen system.
A federation's fiftieth-anniversary experiment
The Dutch Chess Federation marked its fiftieth anniversary by bringing ten foreign masters to the Kurhaus at Scheveningen. Alexander Rueb devised a ten-round team format in which each Dutch player met every visitor once, while teammates never played each other.
The complete schedule produced ten games per round and 100 games overall. This structure later became familiar as the Scheveningen system, a practical way to compare two groups without requiring games among members of the same group.
Ten visitors, including one Dutch substitute
The visiting side featured Edgard Colle, Paul Johner, Géza Maróczy, Jacques Mieses, Holger Norman-Hansen, Richard Réti, Rudolf Spielmann, Frederick Yates and Eugene Znosko-Borovsky. When André Muffang did not arrive, Dutch player Hendrik Strick van Linschoten completed the foreign team.
The Netherlands fielded Jacques Davidson, Max Euwe, Willem Fick, George Schelto Fontein, Rudolf Loman, Adolf Olland, Gerard Oskam, Abraham Speijer, Evert Straat and Henri Weenink.
A decisive visiting victory
The foreign masters won by 69½–30½. Paul Johner and Rudolf Spielmann led the individual scoring with 8½/10; Johner went through the tournament unbeaten. Colle, Maróczy and Réti each scored eight points.
Euwe and Speijer were the leading Dutch scorers on 4½. The archive preserves the full 100-game cross-team matrix, including every one of the event's ten games in each of its ten rounds.
