Isaac Kashdan won the 48th U.S. Open unbeaten with 11½ points from thirteen rounds, a point and a half ahead of Anthony Santasiere and Daniel Yanofsky. The 86-player field met in a modified Swiss tournament.
An international field in Texas
The U.S. Chess Federation conducted the championship with the Corpus Christi Chess Club and Texas Chess Association as hosts. The contemporary entrant list included players from seventeen states, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Cuba, Puerto Rico and New Zealand. The White-Plaza Hotel accommodated the competition.
Kashdan finished with ten wins and three draws. His drawn games came against George Kramer in round five, Santasiere in round nine and Miguel Cuellar in round twelve. Cuellar placed fourth on 9½; Kramer, Augusto Sanchez, Steven T. Shaw and Norman Whitaker shared the next score group on nine.
Two very different draws
The final report singled out Kramer’s nine-move draw with Yanofsky, claimed on repetition, and a 103-move draw between Mary Bain and Charles Joachim. The short Kramer–Yanofsky score is complete in the surviving archive.
Reading the surviving record
Chess Life printed a thirteen-round result table for 76 finishers and separately named ten players who withdrew. Its bye entries and incomplete withdrawal histories prevent an exact count of games actually played. The historical standings therefore come from the published report, rather than from the surviving game scores alone.
Result
The original final table records 76 finishers and names ten withdrawn players separately. This is a thirteen-round Swiss, with byes; the 51 surviving scores cannot reproduce the full standings or a round-robin grid. Historical point totals are retained from Chess Life, 5 September 1947, p.4. Exact actual-game totals for the field and withdrawn players remain unconfirmed.
