Score
Game No. 285 in William Steinitz’s The Book of the Sixth American Chess Congress (1891), printed pages 353–354.
- 4.d3 Either 4 P—Q4, 4 P x QP; 5 P—K5, as recommended by the “Modern Chess Instructor,” or else 4 P x P, with the likely continuation: 4...P—K5; 5 Q—K2, 5 Q—K2; 6 B x Kt, 6 QP x P; 7 Kt—Q4, etc., are stronger replies to Black’s last move which is an unsound defence.
- 9.d4 White has evidently lost a move.
- 12…Qd7 We should have preferred 12...B x P, with the probable continuation: 13 Q—B4 ch., 13 K—R sq.; 14 Q x P, 14 Q—Q2, with a strong passed Pawn in the centre and the superior position.
- 32…Kf8 R—B sq., with the view of doubling the Rooks on the QKt file, was certainly better.
- 34…Bxa4 The sacrifice of the piece, though it gives him three passed Pawns, was unjustifiable in view of the bad position of his King.
- 39.Nh5 This powerful move gives winning force to his attack.
- 41.R8e7+ It was more correct to check with the other Rook and to draw the adverse K—Kt3 without giving him the option of retreating to B sq.
