Game 261, Judd, Max–Baird, John Washington, played April 3, 1889, from Wilhelm Steinitz, The Book of the Sixth American Chess Congress (1891), printed pages 327–328.
- 7.Re1 New, we believe, in this situation and stronger than the more usual P x P.
- 10.Be3 P—Q5, in order to weaken the adverse QBP, was better.
- 11…Nc4 Here or on the next move Black ought to have advanced P—QB3 in order to secure his Q side.
- 14…Bxf3 This exchange rather fortifies the opponent's game.
- 17…f5 Altogether injudicious, in view of the attack to which he is afterward exposed.
- 18.f3 Much better than 18 P x P, 18 Kt—QB4; 19 Q—Q sq., followed by Kt x QP or B—Kt4, accordingly.
- 25…Ncd7 Kt—B4, followed by P—Kt3, was his best defence.
- 26.Bf5 This and the next move are excellently devised and lead to a winning position.
- 27…Nh5 If 27...P—R3; 28 B x P, 28 P x B; 29 R x P ch., 29 K—Kt2; 30 B—Kt6, and wins.
- 29.Bxd7 His victory is now only a question of time.
- 37.Nf7+ He regains, with large interest, the Pawn which he has very ingeniously sacrificed on the last move.
- 48.Bf5 The termination is very pretty and is powerfully played by White.
