Game 276, Judd, Max–Martinez, Dion M, played May 8, 1889, from Wilhelm Steinitz, The Book of the Sixth American Chess Congress (1891), printed pages 343–344.
- 11…a5 It is essential for the defence to play R—K sq., followed by P—KB3, as soon as possible, and he should not have wasted any time on the K side.
- 15…Rb8 Useless. B—Q sq., in order to move safely P—KB3, was the right play.
- 19.Bxc5 Kt—Q4 at once, in order to prepare the advance of the KBP, was stronger.
- 21…g6 This only assists the adverse attack. 21...Kt—K3; 22 Q—KB2, 22 P—QB4, was clearly better.
- 24…Be6 Very feeble. Kt—K3 was more likely to furnish a defence.
- 30…Be6 A thoughtless move, probably adopted under time pressure, as the number of the move leads to assume. P—KB3, followed by K—R2 in reply to R—K4, was his only hope of saving the game.
- 32.Rh6 White's attack is conducted in a masterly manner, and this powerful stroke wins by force.
- 37…f5 Desperate, but there was no legitimate hope.
