Notes by H. N. Pillsbury.
- 3.Nc3 This variation of the ' French ' appears to give White too much freedom of action, and is therefore hardly commendable.
- 8…b6 A better plan to free his game would be 8. P to Q Kt 4.
- 10.Rd1 A powerful move, for Black can only advance the Bishop's Pawn now under the penalty of an isolated Pawn.
- 11…a5 Simply a lost move; Q to B sq at once, followed soon by P to B 4, was the only correct course. Moreover, the Queen's Rook's Pawn should be posted at the third to prevent the entrance of adverse Pieces at Kt 5.
- 14.Be5 With this White acquires a commanding superiority in position.
- 14…Bxf3 Very bad indeed, as White can eventually form a strong attack with his Rooks through the Knight's file; Kt to B sq seems better.
- 15…Bxe5 This is fatal, losing at least a Pawn, and totally disrupting Black's position on the King's side. Kt to B sq might still be played.
- 17…Kh8 Obviously if K x B; 18. Q to Q 3, ch, &c.
- 19…Nxf4 Losing a Piece in a few moves, but, after P to Kt 3; 20. Q to B 3, Kt to Kt sq; 21. Kt to Kt 5 or R to Q 6, Black's game was equally lost.
- 25…g4 Black attempts to regain the Piece, but it is useless.
- 27.Qc3+ For if P to K 4; 28. Q to R 3, ch, K to Kt sq; 29. B x P, &c.
