Game 248, Mason, James–MacLeod, Nicholas, played April 29, 1889, from Wilhelm Steinitz, The Book of the Sixth American Chess Congress (1891), printed pages 314–315.
- 10.h3 Usually disadvantageous, as often pointed out, and quite bad here as it costs a Pawn.
- 10…Nxe4 Very well played.
- 12.Qxe4 If 12 B x B, 12 Q x B; 13 KR—K sq., 13 P—KB4; 14 Kt—Q2, 14 Q—B2, threatening Q x RP, etc.
- 15…b5 Much better was 15...P—B3, for if 16 Q x P, 16 Q—Kt3; 17 Q—R3! (if 17 P—QKt3, 17 Q—R4, with a fine attack), 17...Q x BP, etc.
- 19…c6 Black selects the best move for the defence, as White threatened P—Kt6.
- 30.Kc1 P x P first was much better.
- 39…Kd7 K—Q3 was the right play on principle in order to keep the adverse King at a further distance as long as possible.
- 41…a3 41...P—B5 first was the right play, for if 42 K—K4, 42 K—B3; 43 R—Kt5, 43 P—R6; 44 P x P, 44 R x P, and draws with ease.
- 44…Rf3 Black has made a splendid fight, especially considering the strength of his opponent, and he had still a draw now by rights of the position, but he allows himself to be caught now by his shrewd opponent. After 44...K—Q sq.; 45 R x P, 45 R—R4 ch.; 46 P—B5, 46 R—R8, Black could prevent loss by subsequent good play.
