- 8…c6 It is a noteworthy idea to avoid the early exchange B x Kt. Black threatens now Kt - K sq, after which the Bishop at K Kt 5 would appear to be in a more or less useless position.
- 10…f5 If 10) .... B x Kt; 11) P x B, Q - R 4; 12) B - Kt 3, Q x B P White would not continue 13) P - B 4 on account of P x P; 14) R P x P, Kt - Kt 3, but 13) Q - B 3, K - Kt 2; 14) Q R - K sq. But he might well have played 10) .... Kt - Kt 3; 11) Kt - B 5, K - R sq, and continued by P - Q 4 and B - K 3. The move actually made exposes the King, and compared to this, the advantage of having undoubled the Pawns, is only slight.
- 11.Qh5 Better 11) P - B 4, P x B P; 12) P x P.
- 13…f5 Though he achieves his object to retrieve the pressure on the Q P by this advance, the Pawn should nevertheless have been kept on K B 2 to support the Knight on Kt 3. He ought to have continued with 13) .... Kt - Kt 3; 14) Kt - B 5, Q - B 3.
- 16.f5 A fine conception, whose motif is clear. Black's superiority of Pawns in the centre will be of value only in the end game-and that is far away; but White's King's side Pawns are strong also for the middle game. They exclude the Black Bishop from K 3, the Knight from K Kt 3 and assist in forming mating attacks.
- 19.Ng6+ White is not satisfied with 19) P - Kt 5, Q - Kt sq; 20) K - R sq, R x P. He brings about the end, instead, in a manner equally powerful and elegant.
