Game No. 151 in the book (round 17): a King's Gambit Declined won by Saviely Tartakower (White) against Carl Schlechter, annotated by Lasker.

1. 5…Nf6 The sacrifice of the K P is quite justified.
2. 8.Nf3 Should White defend the Pawn by 8) Kt - Q 2, Black would play B x Kt, and the resulting doubled Pawn would be defenceless.
3. 10…h6 White's threat of B x Kt, followed by Kt - Kt 5 and Q - R 5, was only apparent, hence the defensive move of P - K R 3 was not necessary. The right play was 10) .... Kt - Q 2, followed by Kt ( Q 2 ) - B 2 in reply to any developing moves of White. If then, however, 11) B x Kt, R x B; 12) Kt - Kt 5, R - K 2; 13) Q - R 5, P - K R 3; 14) Kt x P?, Q - K 1, winning a piece for three Pawns, with a good position for attack.
4. 13…cxd4 He could not play 13) .... B - K 3, as 14) Kt x B, Q x Kt; 15) B x P would have broken up his King's wing.
5. 14.Nxf7 A pretty and accurately calculated sacrifice, which, with one stroke, lays bare the damage done by Black's tenth move.
6. 19…Qf6 If P x B; 20) Q - Kt 6 ch, B - Kt 2; 21) R - K 1, B - Q 2; 22) Kt - Q 6, P - Kt 4; 23) B - Q 3, threatening R - K B 1; if now 23) .... Q - Kt 5, White mates in four, commencing R - K 8 ch.
