Game No. 380, printed pages 445–446, in Wilhelm Steinitz, The Book of the Sixth American Chess Congress (1891).
- 22…Ng6 By steady manoeuvring which was supported by good judgment, Black had obtained much the superior position, of which, however, he fails to avail himself at the decisive point. 22...P—B6; 23 P x P, 23 Kt—Kt3, followed by Kt—B5, would have secured the victory.
- 36…f3 Beautiful play that ought to have given him great advantage.
- 38…Nxe2+ But he spoils the effect of his previous fine play. R—K2 or Kt x B would have ultimately left him with two pieces for the Rook, and a good game.
- 44…Rxg4 The onslaught does not succeed, but he had also otherwise a lost game.
