Notes by R. Teichmann.
- 7.Qg4 I do not believe in this move, whether played in this or other variations of the French defence; the attack of the second player on the Queen's side is as a rule stronger than White's direct King's side attack.
- 12…b5 Black inaugurates at once a powerful attack on the Queen's side, whilst White's attack is not sufficiently prepared yet.
- 16.Nd1 If R x P then Kt to K 5, followed by Kt to B 7, wins the exchange.
- 19…Bb5 This sacrifice of a Pawn, although leading to a strong attack, does not appear to be quite correct. Simply 19.... Kt x B, followed by K R to Q B sq, B to Kt 4, and P to Q R 4, would have yielded a lasting attack without loss of material.
- 30.g4 There is really nothing threatened on the Queen's side now, and he is quite right in pursuing his attack on the other wing.
- 34.Qd3 An unaccountable mistake. Black's last move was an error, and now 34. R x Kt, R x P, ch; 35. Q x R (!), Q x Q, ch; 36. R to Kt 2 would have given White a won game (see diagram).
- 34…Rc8 Ingenious and decisive; after this unexpected stroke the White position is beyond remedy.
- 37…Rxb2 Black finishes the game with great vigour and elegance.
