Game 51 in Philip W. Sergeant’s Morphy’s Games of Chess (1916), printed pages 109–110. Commentary from this edition; named earlier annotators remain credited in the notes. Third game of the 1858 Anderssen match. The source gives the playing time as two hours.
- 4.d4 The present game is the only example which we have of Morphy’s treatment of the Lopez when met by the Berlin Defence. 4 P—Q4 is seldom adopted now in master-play, being considered productive, with correct play on both sides, of no more than a level game.
- 6…c6 This, however, is not good. KKt×P is better; and P×P better still.
- 7.O-O Anderssen follows a Handbuch variation and comes to grief in it. M.L. points out the irony of a German master failing in a line of play analysed in Germany. That Morphy knew exactly what he was doing is clear from the quotation below.
- 7…cxb5 B—B4, to which he could have replied, is better; 7..Kt—Q4 might be answered by 8 Q×P, Kt—B2; 9 B—QB4, P×B.
- 8.Bg5 Best. 8..P—KR3 is fatal.
- 9.exf6 If P×P, 10 Q×P, R—KKt1; 11 B—B4.
- 12.c3 Morphy remarks in his notes on this game (A.C.M., 1859): “Up to this move the game coincides with one played by Lange in his Schachpartieen. That distinguished master now played 12 Kt—R3, P—QR3; 13 Q—K2, Q—K3; 14 Q—Q2, Q—QKt3; 15 Q—Kt4ch, P—Q3; 16 Kt—B4, Q—B4; 17 Kt×P, R×Q; 18 R—K8 mate.” Here 13..P—KKt3; 14 QR—Q1, P—R4; 15 R—Q3 is better, but White’s position is tremendously strong. Morphy plays to develop his Kt to a more natural square. A game Bird—Steinitz, 1867, ctd.: 12 Q—K2, P—KKt3; 13 Kt—Q2.
- 17…g5 It is difficult to comprehend this move from a player of Anderssen’s strength, when one step less with the Pawn was so clearly better.
- 18.Qd1 Not 18 Kt×P because of the reply Q—Q3.
- 19…Rg8 A crowning blunder. 19..K—Kt2 is necessary. Even 19..P—KKt5 was better.
- 20.Rxe6 The Rook cannot be captured. Anderssen shows none of his high talent in this game.
