Carl Oscar Ahues won Bad Harzburg’s twelve-player master tournament with 9/11, one and a half points ahead of Herbert Heinicke and Friedrich Sämisch. The host club dates the eleven-round event to 7–17 September 1946 and places play in the Sanatorium am Burgberg.
A return to tournament play
Bad Harzburg and Braunschweig club members organized the tournament under difficult postwar conditions. The host history reproduces the tournament-book foreword and records Lange–Heinz Lehmann, Elm–Ahues and Dünhaupt–Hübener as the three beauty-prize games. A concluding blitz tournament was a separate competition and is not included here.
Complete scores, with source disagreements
All 66 pairings of the main round robin have surviving scores. The host’s full field and beauty-prize report identify the participant labeled Reinhold Lehmann in the game records as Heinz Lehmann; his eleven game listings use the corrected name.
One result remains disputed. The native Lange–Rellstab score and federation table give Lange a win, but the host table and its quoted tournament-book foreword give Rellstab the point. The archive retains the native result, so its grid gives Lange 7 and Rellstab 6; the club account instead has Rellstab fourth on 7 and Lange among three players on 6. All accounts agree on Ahues’s victory.
Native dates remain August 1946 despite the host’s September interval, and native rounds remain unknown. The reprinted Elm–Ahues score ends at 28…Rg8+ with resignation, while the archive retains four additional native plies. These differences are disclosed without speculative changes to dates, results or moves.
