A thin field, a breakthrough winner

By 1950 the January Hoogovens tournament, run by the Koninklijke Hoogovens steelworks, was an established fixture in Beverwijk, though the foreign contingent that year was weaker than usual — O'Kelly was absent, and an announced Hungarian master and the Czech František Foltys never appeared. The ten players contested a single round-robin from 7 to 15 January, one game a day, with the two "half-Belgian" entrants Frits van Seters and Victor Soultanbeieff rounding out the field.

The presence of the 48-year-old Euwe, Dutch chess's towering figure and world champion from 1935 to 1937, made the young home player's result all the more striking.

Donner a point clear

Donner surprised everyone by finishing on 7/9, a clear point ahead of Euwe and Rossolimo, who tied for second on 6, with Nicolaas Cortlever fourth on 5½. For a still little-known Dutch player it was a genuine sensation.

It marked the start of a long and colourful career: Donner would win the tournament again and grow into one of the Netherlands' strongest and most celebrated grandmasters, as famous for his writing as for his chess.
