Beverwijk 1966 (Hoogovens)
The 28th Hoogovens tournament, which began on 12 January 1966 in Beverwijk, produced a sole winner. Rising Soviet grandmaster Lev Polugaevsky took first place outright on 11½/15, holding off two Hungarians — László Szabó and István Bilek — in a sixteen-player round-robin.
◈A Soviet victory in Beverwijk
The 28th edition of the steelworks tournament was again a single round-robin of sixteen players over fifteen rounds. Polugaevsky, then in his early thirties and climbing toward the world's elite, dominated the leaderboard and finished clear first on 11½ — half a point ahead of the veteran Szabó on 11, with Bilek third on 10½ and Borislav Ivkov fourth on 10.
Behind the leaders came Iivo Nei in fifth on 8½. The rest of the field — including Mato Damjanović, Miroslav Filip, the Dutch players Jan Hein Donner, Kick Langeweg, Theo van Scheltinga and Carel van den Berg, and Milko Bobotsov — was tightly bunched in the middle and lower reaches of the table.
◈A stepping-stone win
Polugaevsky would go on to become a multiple Soviet champion and a three-time world-championship Candidate, celebrated for his deep opening research — the sharp Sicilian line beginning 5...a6 and 6...e5 still bears his name. His clear victory at Beverwijk was an early marker of that top-flight career, won in a field studded with grandmasters.
For the two Hungarian runners-up the result underlined how competitive the mid-1960s Hoogovens events had become: Szabó and Bilek both finished ahead of the strong Yugoslav Ivkov, yet neither could catch the Soviet leader.
