Bucharest 1967
By 1967 Florin Gheorghiu was the standard-bearer of Romanian chess — the country's first grandmaster and its reigning national champion, fresh from defeating Bobby Fischer at the 1966 Havana Olympiad. On home soil in Bucharest he confirmed his standing, taking clear first with 9½/13 ahead of the Soviet grandmaster Evgeni Vasiukov and West Germany's Helmut Pfleger.
◈Gheorghiu at his peak
Florin Gheorghiu had risen fast. He was World Junior Champion in 1963, an International Master the same year, and in 1965 became Romania's first grandmaster. At the 1966 Havana Olympiad he beat Bobby Fischer — the only competitive game Fischer ever lost to a younger player. The 1967–68 season would bring a shared first at Hastings alongside Vlastimil Hort and Leonid Stein.
The Bucharest field of fourteen was a typical Eastern-bloc round-robin with a Western accent, including the Soviet grandmaster Evgeni Vasiukov, West Germany's Helmut Pfleger, Hungary's Ervin Haag, Czechoslovakia's Jiří Fichtl, East Germany's Artur Hennings, Israel's Moshe Czerniak, and home players Béla Soós, Carol Partos, Theodor Ghițescu, Dolfi Drimer, Gheorghe Mititelu, Victor Ciocâltea, and Emil Ungureanu.
◈A home victory
Gheorghiu won the tournament with 9½ points from 13 games, finishing a point clear of Vasiukov and Pfleger, who tied for second on 8½. It was exactly the kind of result Romanian chess had come to expect of him during a decade in which few at home could match his class.
Across the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s Gheorghiu remained the dominant figure in Romanian chess, a fixture on the national Olympiad team and the yardstick against which the country's rising players measured themselves. This home win sits squarely in his prime.
