A rising Soviet takes the top spot

Bucharest's 1974 tournament again drew a fifteen-player international field with a single Soviet guest at its head. That guest, Vitaly Tseshkovsky, was in the middle of his breakthrough years: an International Master since 1973, he would be awarded the grandmaster title in 1975 and go on to win the Soviet Championship in 1978 and 1986.

He set the pace throughout, finishing with 11 points from 14 games for a clear first place.

Kurajica pushes to the finish

Yugoslav grandmaster Bojan Kurajica chased Tseshkovsky all the way and finished second on 10½. Finland's Heikki Westerinen was third on 9, and Romania's Mihai Suba shared the next places as the home contingent filled out the table.

Local favourite Victor Ciocâltea, who would win the tournament the following year, placed in the middle of the field this time.
