The second Costa del Sol international, staged in the fast-growing resort town of Torremolinos, ended in a three-way tie for first. World Junior Champion Bruno Parma, the Hungarian veteran László Szabó, and Spain's Francisco José Pérez all finished on 7½/11. Parma had looked like the outright winner before a late loss to Portugal's Joaquim Durão pulled him back into the pack.
Chess on the Costa del Sol
Torremolinos in the early 1960s was a fishing village turning into one of the Mediterranean's busiest tourist resorts, and its mild winter climate made it a natural host for an international chess tournament. The 1962 event was the second in the Costa del Sol series, following the inaugural tournament of 1961.
The twelve-player field brought together grandmasters and international masters from Spain, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Belgium, Italy, Portugal and the Netherlands for a single round-robin over eleven rounds.
A three-way tie
Parma, the reigning World Junior Champion, set the early pace and seemed on course for clear first. An unexpected defeat by the Portuguese player Joaquim Durão changed the picture, dropping him into a share of first with Szabó and Pérez, all on 7½.
Roman Toran finished a close fourth on 7. Albéric O'Kelly de Galway came fifth on 6½; he went through the tournament unbeaten but agreed too many short draws to make a run at the top.
A brilliancy prize
The tournament's brilliancy prize went to Ricardo Calvo, Spain's junior champion, for a first-round win over the Dutch master Kick Langeweg in which a piece sacrifice opened an irresistible attack.
