Costa del Sol 1967
A year after sharing the title, the Belgian grandmaster Albéric O'Kelly de Galway went one better at the seventh Costa del Sol international, held at Málaga's Palacio Municipal. He scored 8½ from 11 for clear first, a half point ahead of Spain's Arturo Pomar Salamanca.
◈The seventh edition at Málaga
Now well established, the Costa del Sol series returned in February 1967, this time in the Palacio Municipal in Málaga. Twelve players contested the single round-robin, blending Spanish home strength — Pomar, Fernando Visier Segovia, Antonio Medina García and Román Torán Albero — with visitors including Italy's Stefano Tatai, Germany's Heinz Lehmann, Israel's Moshe Czerniak, Finland's Heikki Westerinen and New Zealand's Robert Wade.
O'Kelly de Galway was more than an over-the-board grandmaster: a former World Correspondence Chess Champion and a widely read chess writer and commentator, he was one of the most recognisable figures in post-war European chess.
◈O'Kelly clear at the top
O'Kelly led the field home on 8½ from 11 for outright first. Pomar was second on 8, and a three-way logjam on 6½ — Tatai, Lehmann and Visier — filled the places behind them. It was a satisfying return for O'Kelly, who had shared first here in 1966 and now claimed the Costa del Sol title in his own right.
