The second Dortmunder Schachtage was a genuine international, its twelve-player field headed by two vastly experienced masters who could not be separated. Hungary's László Szabó and Romania's Victor Ciocâltea shared first place on 8½ from 11, while reigning Women's World Champion Nona Gaprindashvili announced her class with a share of third.
The field strengthens
One year on from its improvised debut, the Schachtage returned to the pavilion in Dortmund's Westfalenpark from 3 to 14 May 1974, this time as a twelve-player round-robin of 66 games. The visiting contingent was stronger and more cosmopolitan, led by László Szabó, a Hungarian grandmaster and fixture of world-class events since the 1930s, and Victor Ciocâltea, a many-time Romanian champion.
The event's headline guest was Nona Gaprindashvili, who had held the Women's World Championship since 1962. She was joined among the leaders by the Yugoslav grandmaster Mato Damjanović.
Szabó and Ciocâltea tie for first
Szabó and Ciocâltea each finished on 8½/11 to share the title, half a point clear of the chasing pack. Gaprindashvili and Damjanović followed on 8, with the World Champion placed third — a striking result against a field of male grandmasters and masters. Krzysztof Pytel was the best of the rest on 6½.
