Ligterink defeats the favorites and claims his only Dutch crown
Gert Ligterink overturned the established order at Leeuwarden. He defeated Jan Timman, Hans Ree and Jan Hein Donner head-to-head, scored 10/13, and finished a full point ahead of Timman and Ree to become Dutch champion.
Beating the strongest
Ligterink built his championship on eight victories, including direct wins over the three most decorated contenders in the field. Four draws completed his score; his only defeat came against Gennadi Sosonko.
One unusual playing room
Sosonko's win over the eventual champion was played in Sosonko's hotel room because he was suffering from inflamed tonsils. It remained Ligterink's sole setback in a tournament he won by one point, with Ree and Timman tied on 9.
