Dutch Championship Match 1942: Euwe – Van den Hoek
Arnold van den Hoek emerged from a crowded qualifying contest to challenge Max Euwe for the Dutch title. In their ten-game match at The Hague, Euwe demonstrated the gulf that still separated him from the domestic field, winning 8–2 without a defeat.
◈From a three-way race to the title match
The qualifying eight-player tournament in Leeuwarden ended with Van den Hoek, Nicolaas Cortlever and Adriaan de Groot all on 5/7. Van den Hoek, a 20-year-old Amsterdam student, won the short three-player decider and with it the right to face Euwe.

The challenger could not turn qualification into a match victory. Euwe won six games and drew four, producing an official +6 −0 =4 record and an 8–2 final score. It was another unbeaten national-title match for the former world champion.
