The IBM series

The IBM international was one of Western Europe's leading invitational events of the 1960s and 1970s, staged in Amsterdam from 1961 to 1981 and sponsored by IBM's Dutch arm, IBM Nederland. It grew into a large summer festival: by 1963 some 120 players were competing across a grandmaster group, a masters' group, reserve sections, and a separate IBM-B tournament for rising talent. Over its two decades the roll of main-group winners came to include five world champions.

The 1965 tournament was the fifth edition, contested as a ten-player round-robin over nine rounds.

Donner leads at home

Jan Hein Donner scored 6½ out of 9 to finish first, half a point clear of Bruno Parma on 6. The experienced Hungarian grandmaster László Szabó took third on 5½, ahead of Yugoslavia's Petar Trifunović on 5, with Nikola Karaklajić and Miroslav Filip filling out the upper half of the table.

It was a satisfying result for Donner, then the strongest Dutch player and a celebrated newspaper columnist, winning the country's flagship international in front of a home audience.
