The seventh IBM international grew to a twelve-player round-robin in July 1967, and Hungary's Lajos Portisch — then emerging as one of the West's strongest grandmasters — carried it off with 8 out of 11, finishing a full point clear of the Soviet grandmaster and author Alexander Kotov.
The IBM series
Sponsored by IBM Nederland and held in Amsterdam from 1961 to 1981, the IBM international was among Western Europe's leading invitational tournaments. It anchored a large summer chess festival, with the grandmaster main group at the head of a set of masters' and reserve sections. The 1967 event was the seventh edition and expanded the main group to twelve players over eleven rounds.
Portisch on top
Lajos Portisch scored 8 out of 11 to win clearly, a point ahead of Alexander Kotov on 7. The Dutch master Kick Langeweg and Yugoslavia's Dragoljub Ćirić shared third place on 6½, with the Soviet player Moiseev and the home favourite Jan Hein Donner close behind.
The win came as Portisch was establishing himself as a fixture in the world's elite; over the following decade he would qualify repeatedly for the Candidates matches that decided challengers for the world title.
