Madrid International Tournament 1943
Paul Keres won the 1943 Madrid International Tournament unbeaten with 13/14. His twelve victories carried him a point and a half clear of Juan Manuel Fuentes in a complete fifteen-player round robin.
An international tournament in wartime Madrid
The Spanish Chess Federation organized the Gran Torneo Internacional at Madrid's Círculo de Bellas Artes. Wartime travel prevented every invited master from attending, but the final field still joined Keres, Friedrich Sämisch and Alfred Brinckmann with leading Spanish players.
Fifteen contestants met once apiece. One player had a bye in every round, leaving seven games per round and 105 overall; the contemporary tournament book presented the complete collection.
Thirteen points from fourteen
Keres conceded only two draws and won his other twelve games. Fuentes finished second on 11½, with Brinckmann third on 9½; Antonio Medina and José Alonso Leira followed on 8½.
The Spanish contingent included Arturo Pomar, only twelve years old, who scored 5½/14. The rapid competition and Alekhine exhibition held after the main tournament were separate side events and are not part of this collection.
