Mar del Plata 1941
The fourth Mar del Plata tournament opened the event's great international era, and it owed its strength to the Second World War. Eleven masters who had travelled to Argentina for the 1939 Buenos Aires Olympiad were still stranded there when war closed Europe behind them, and they gathered at the Atlantic resort in March 1941. Sweden's Gideon Stahlberg won the eighteen-player round-robin by a single half-point from Miguel Najdorf, with Erich Eliskases third.
◈Chess in exile
When the Second World War broke out during the 1939 Chess Olympiad in Buenos Aires, many of Europe's leading players chose to remain in Argentina rather than sail home to a continent at war. The seaside city of Mar del Plata became the stage where they met, and from 1941 for three decades the tournament ranked among the strongest anywhere in the world. Its fourth edition gathered eleven European refugees alongside Argentina's own masters.
Stahlberg, Najdorf, Eliskases, Ludwig Engels, Paulin Frydman, Moshe Czerniak and Movsa Feigins had all been marooned far from home. The German-born Sonja Graf, one of the strongest women players of the era, completed the eighteen-player field and finished last on 2½ — a reminder that this was as much a gathering of the displaced as a sporting event.
◈Stahlberg's half-point
Gideon Stahlberg, long reckoned among the finest players never to contest a world-title match, scored 13 out of 17 to take first prize a single half-point clear of Najdorf on 12½. Erich Eliskases was third on 11½, with Engels and Frydman sharing fourth on 11.
It was the last time for years that anyone would keep Najdorf out of first place at Mar del Plata. From 1942 the Polish emigre made the tournament his own, and Stahlberg's 1941 victory stands as the opening chapter of a rivalry that defined South American chess through the war years.
