Mar del Plata 1952
Mar del Plata's international was the flagship event of the Argentine chess calendar, staged each year at the Atlantic resort. In 1952 the home players took command: Héctor Rossetto and Julio Bolbochán finished level at the top on 11½/17 to share first place, ahead of a strong South American and visiting European field.
◈The resort international
Held at the Atlantic seaside resort of Mar del Plata, the city's international tournament was for decades the flagship of Argentine chess. From 1941 it ran as a strong invitational that brought the leading South American players together with visiting European masters, and Miguel Najdorf and Gideon Ståhlberg had dominated its early editions.
◈Two champions at the top
The 1952 international ended in a shared victory for the home country. Héctor Rossetto and Julio Bolbochán each scored 11½ from 17 games to tie for first, half a point ahead of the Colombian Miguel Cuéllar and the Yugoslav grandmaster Petar Trifunović, who shared third on 11. Paul Michel followed on 10½.
The two Bolbochán names in the standings belong to the Argentine brothers — Julio, who shared the title, and Jacobo, who finished further down the field.
